30.11.2009 Máire Geoghegan-Quinn named new Research and Innovation Commissioner

Irishwoman Máire Geoghegan-Quinn has been named European Commissioner for Research and Innovation by Commission President José Manuel Barroso. Please fina a valuable quotations from her, that she said at the hearing at the European Parliament:

"We need to modernise in the smaller countries that do not seem to be able to get the take-up that they need. But it is not just in my area that we need to do that under the Framework Programme. We also need to do that, I think, by enabling Structural Funds to be used as they were very effectively in the Member State that I know best: to build up a knowledge economy. So I think in using funds from the Framework Programme but also enabling the EUR 86 billion that is available in the Structural Funds area, I think we could do a very useful job of work in building up, not just the infrastructures, but also, of course, the capacities."
